Dr Rosemary Stanfield-Johnson earned her Ph.D. from New York University in 1993 in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Literatures. She is currently Associate Professor of Religious History in the Department of History at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Her research interests include late medieval and early modern Iranian history, Shi‘i political and popular culture, and popular sectarian literature of the pre-modern period. She publishes mostly on Safavid Iran. Her most recent article on a Safavid narrative will be published in Der Islam next year. She is also currently working on a book on politics and public ritual in sixteenth-century Iran, under contract with I.B. Tauris. Dr. Stanfield-Johnson’s teaching covers the formative period of Islamic history, the Middle Periods, and modern Middle Eastern history.
Her research awards include a membership at the School of Historical Studies of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, a Senior Fulbright Research award in Hyderabad, India, in affiliation with Osmania University, grants from the American Research Center in Egypt, the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, and grants-in-aid from the University of Minnesota for research support in Iran and India as well the University of Minnesota Duluth in support of travel and research in Armenia Jordan, Turkey and the Netherlands.
